Ann Coulter will speak about “How the Liberal Mob Is Endangering America” tonight at 7:30 p.m. in Gifford Auditorium. Coulter is an American conservative social and political commentator, eight-time best-selling author, syndicated columnist and lawyer. Free tickets are available at the Schine Box Office.
As college students who pride ourselves on achieving a liberal arts education, well-roundedness is our motivation.
We are exposed to people of different backgrounds, races, creeds and religions. Often, many of us come into contact with ideas we don’t agree with, but even these ideas are valuable to our understanding of the world.
The College Republicans are a minority on this campus. Political dissent is necessary and required for the health of any democracy. And there is no group on campus better positioned than the College Republicans to deliver this dissent.
College campuses should foster the free exchange of ideas and most importantly, be havens of free speech. This freedom enables Coulter to express her ideas as much as it enables each of us to express ours. The freedom of speech must be universal.
For those who disagree with Coulter, sometimes a challenge to our convictions serves to strengthen our resolve. We learn from the rhetoric presented to us in class, but we can also learn from outside sources.
There is value in having the ability to think for ourselves and define our own moral compass. This will help us decide what is worth believing in.
The College Republicans welcome all students to attend the lecture, but more importantly, to question their convictions.
