Clemson scored a goal in the 30th minute and never looked back.
Clemson forward Gabby Byorth’s serve into the box off of a corner kick didn’t find her teammates, but Syracuse was unable to make a play on the ball. It was tracked down by Claire Wagner and her shot found the back of the net to give the Tigers the lead, and eventually the win.
Syracuse (5-7-3, 2-4 Atlantic Coast) lost 1-0 to No. 24 Clemson (10-2-2, 3-2-1) on Sunday at Riggs Field in Clemson, South Carolina. SU freshman goalkeeper Courtney Brosnan tied her career high with 11 saves in the loss, including five within the first 25 minutes of play.
Clemson applied the defensive pressure throughout the game, as SU was only able to get two shots off. The game marked the sixth time the team was shut out.
Syracuse challenged often late, but was unable to capitalize on any chances.
Orange forward Stephanie Skilton got behind the Clemson defense late in the second half, but was called offside, negating what would have been a great opportunity. In a game in which opportunities were scarce, the penalty proved costly.
Clemson totaled 22 shots in the game, including 12 on goal.
Three of the Orange’s four losses in ACC play have now been 1-0 losses. Syracuse’s next game is on Saturday at 5 p.m. against No. 14 Notre Dame (9-4-1, 4-2) at SU Soccer Stadium.
